de’lacy – hideaway (1995)

hideaway-1

The video revolves around singer Rainie Lassiter, in New York, just singing the song and dancing a little bit. (Read: a VERY little bit). But nothing else is needed. It’s clearly an attempt at an arty piece, with slow motion traffic and people, close ups of signage, and the occasional filmstrip effect and it actually works rather well.

hideaway-2

Even the slightest nod toward the feelings of this trapped woman, who just wants to escape can only be applauded, just because its at least attempted. It’s deep y’all.

hideaway-3

Really simple and yet effective. The location of the video and the shots of ‘city’ life work well with the throbbing rhythm of the track and you end up wholeheartedly believing that she does indeed need a ha-ha-ha-hideaway.

in a nutshell…

Got any salmon?
Low. Barely any movement at all.

de l’Épée factor
Medium-low. The video feels claustrophobic at times, matching the song well, and there’s nothing out of the ordinary.

Dworkin-ism
High. No offense to Rainie meant but the director has clearly never heard that sex sells.

You’re not alone..
Medium-high. Driving ’round a busy city is a popular form of entertainment. See: Olive, Everything But The Girl, others.

  1. Phenomenal list. The number one video has long been a favorite of mine. I wouldn’t change a single one. I especially like that you included Baby D.

  2. Proficient says:
