haddaway – what is love? (1993)

This video has nearly 17 million viewers on YouTube but I challenge ANY of them to explain to me what is going on. My guess is that there’s some sort of vampire in a creepy old house and Haddaway is in love with her, partly because she’s in leather, and Haddaway loves leather.

Then he gets distracted by some other dancers and mirrors and his pecs but then the other dancers are vampires too(?) and then he’s in a suit, is he a vampire and it’s some sort of orgy?
Then he does the robot at 2:43 and I forget everything else because of the awesomeness of it.

Medium-high. The man can clearly dance. And has friends that can dance too. There’s also a fair sprinkling of strobe lighting.

de l’Épée factor
Medium-low. Despite my confusion about what’s going on, the song is about love, and the video contains girls and boys and a bit of loving. Tenuous but there’s a link there somewhere.

Dworkin-ism
Medium. The main vampire does have a rather fetching one piece leather thong bikini type of thing but oddly, it doesn’t seem sexual. Just functional. Like, of course that’s what female vampires wear.

High. But only momentarily high. Take a look at Dr Alban or Culture Beat and tell me the difference. Black guy. Old house. Leather vest. Standard.
